Wanna Go Fast? Don’t Miss the Time Attack Challenge at Road America in April

As Ricky Bobby once said, “I wanna go fast.”
When it comes to speed, it doesn’t get any faster than America’s National Park of Speed, Road America – and luckily for all of us, the 4.048-mile racing circuit in Elkhart Lake, WI, will be home to the Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge at Road America on April 12-13, 2025. Boasting 14 turns of racetrack fury, featuring the famous Turn 5, Carousel, Kink, and a front straight that lets you truly stretch your car’s legs, this is one of those stops on the Time Attack Challenge schedule you’ll regret if you miss.
So don’t miss it.
What To Expect
Here’s how it could go: Eggers for breakfast, bratwurst for lunch, a practice session, and three timed competitive sessions on Saturday. Then a cozy camping spot will keep you comfortably onsite all weekend. Sunday will bring four thrillingly competitive sessions, one awesome podium celebration, and as many cases of Spotted Cow as you can run across state lines like you’re Burt Reynolds.
Want more details on the event itself? Can’t blame you!
It starts with a Friday arrival, registration, and time to get everything ready for the fastest road course in the country.
Saturday morning begins with a driver meeting, a 25-minute practice for the group you’re in (split up by both speed of your car and ability/experience level of the driver), and then there are three more 25-minute timed sessions throughout the day. The best single lap in those three sessions will serve as what we call the “Saturday Score.”
Sunday looks very similar – which is a great thing! This time, though, it’s four 25-minute sessions, with the best time on Sunday serving as the “Sunday Score.”
From there, it’s simple: We add Saturday’s Score to Sunday’s Score, and that’s the total score. That total will determine the order of finish, both overall and in each class.
How Fast Can I Go?
You go as fast as you’re comfortable with – and as fast as you can. After last year’s event at Road America, there are numerous targets to aim for. Here are some of the standouts:
- Best Overall: Steve Forrer, Max 1, Ferrari 488, 2:22.467
- Best in Tuner 2: Nicholas Hendrix, Chevrolet Corvette, 2:25.438
- Best in Club Spec Mustang: Trevor Kindlon, Ford Mustang, 2:38.241
- Best in Sport 6: Justin Vandergriff, Mazda MX-5, 2:49.624
Or shoot to improve on your very own personal best.

Who Else Will Be There?
Another fantastic question! If you’re familiar with the Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge program, there are a lot of names on the entry list you’ll recognize. There are likely even more cars that you’ll recognize without the driver’s name because, to be honest, we know most people by their car.
Steve Forrer is back, this time wheeling a Ferrari 296 GTB, trying to remain King of the Park, but Dallas Reed and David Byczek would love to knock him off that throne.
You can check out the full entry list here, but remember that Road America brings out both the best in the Time Attack world AND the locals who know Road America like the back of their hand. That means this event has a feel that’s unique from all other Time Attack Challenges – and you never know what’s going to happen once the cars hit the track.
The cap for the event is set at 90, so if you’re trying to decide, decide soon.
Anything Else?
If you get to that registration page and find you have questions, know that the Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge staff is ready and willing to help out with any inquiries you may have about procedures, classing, and more.
Racing legend Ricky Bobby felt like he was “riding inside an asteroid or a comet or something” when he was going fast. If you want to feel like that too, you know what you need to do.
