Register Now: 2023 Time Trials National Tour at VIR

The year has only just begun, but believe it or not, the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials National Tour Powered by Hagerty (TTNT) season is already underway. No, a 2023 TTNT event hasn’t taken place yet, but preparations are in full swing – with that, registration for the March 10-12, 2023, TTNT at VIRginia International Raceway awaits, and you need to join the fun.

VIR is a rock-n-roll motorsport circuit that tests skill and fortitude. From the tricky Climbing Esses to the technical decreasing radius Oak Tree Curve to the rise and fall of Roller Coaster and Hog Pen, VIR is a racetrack like no other. This is no small-time facility, either, as last year’s SCCA National Championship Runoffs took place along the same winding 3.27-mile, 18-turn circuit that this year’s TTNT season opener is tackling.

In a nutshell, any event at VIR is a bundle of intense action filled with rollicking good times – and with the TTNT coming to town the second weekend of March, you need to be a part of it.

So Many Ways to Play

Each stop on the Time Trials National Tour boasts uniquely exciting elements, with the opening round at VIR jumping in with an exclamation point.

“There will be so many ways to play at this opening event,” says John Hunter, SCCA’s National Time Trials Manager. “The March 10-12 Time Trials National Tour will offer drivers six track sessions – two full-course practice sessions on Saturday morning, two timed sessions on Saturday afternoon, and another two timed sessions on Sunday morning. Saturday’s fastest timed lap will add to Sunday’s fastest timed lap to create your score for the weekend.”

If timed competition isn’t your thing, Hunter points out that there are ample treats for you to enjoy.

“Those looking to lap VIR’s circuit without the stress of the clock ticking can opt to participate in the track day sessions that also will run throughout the weekend,” Hunter says. “And in the paddock, there’s going to be even more to take in.”

Driver Motorsports out of nearby Rustburg, VA, will be on site hosting a Japanese-based car show. Driver Motorsports is a premium JDM importer that doesn’t just sell cars, but also modifies them – you definitely won’t want to miss the amazing cars the company will be attracting to the track this weekend.

Furthermore, Apex Racing Lab will be on site with multiple simulator rigs, allowing attendees to get on track and participate in a different – and extremely fun – way.

“The opening round of the 2023 Time Trials National Tour at VIR will undeniably be a mini festival,” Hunter adds.

Bringing the Fun

While Time Trials National Tour sessions are timed, a key element of the event is not worrying about the competition. Sure, some drivers will be gunning for a trophy finish, and you’re free to hold your time up to theirs to see how you stack up. But when it comes to Time Trials National Tours, what’s truly important is achieving a personal best.

“First and foremost, the Time Trials National Tour is for everyone to have fun and push to their own comfort level,” Hunter points out. “For some, that means competing for the class or overall win; for others, it’s feeling an adrenaline rush or improving lap times over previous sessions. In recreational basketball or baseball games, nobody compares themselves to the pros – it’s the camaraderie and adventure that keeps people coming back, and that’s exactly what we strive to capture in a Time Trials National Tour weekend.”

Aiding in this is the Hagerty-hosted Saturday evening party at most Time Trials National Tour events, and then awards during Sunday afternoon’s KONI Podium Celebration that extend beyond traditional class hurrahs.

“The goal is for everyone to leave the weekend with a smile on their face and the desire to return to push their personal limits even further the next time,” Hunter concludes. “We’ve been pretty successful at that over the last few years, and we have every intention to make 2023 better than ever.”
